Memorial Day is a time of remembrance; a time for Americans to honor those who have given their lives while defending our nation. On Monday, May 27, I have the honor and privilege of leading the City of Irvine’s tribute to fallen military service members during a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park.

Attendees will have the opportunity to memorialize our troops’ sacrifice by writing down a brief remembrance to be posted on a memory board. Cards will also be available for well-wishers to send a message of appreciation and support to Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion.

For more information, call 949-724-6606 or click here to download a pre-made remembrance card for the event. Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park is located at 4 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine. Guests are encouraged to park in the lot at Harvard Ave. and San Juan Street.

An additional Memorial Day ceremony will be taking place on May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial at Northwood Community Park, located on the corner of Bryan Ave. and Yale Ave. Bring blankets or chairs for seating during the program.

Irvine remains among state’s fastest growing cities

Overall growth in California has slowed to a crawl, but the population continues to boom in Irvine, according to new estimates released by the state Department of Finance. For the second year in a row, Irvine ranked as the seventh fastest growing city in California, with a growth rate of 3.2 percent for 2012. That’s up from 2.5 percent 2011, when Irvine shared the seventh spot with Calabasas in Los Angeles County. Irvine is alone at seventh this time, however, growing by more than 7,000 residents from Jan. 1, 2012 to Jan. 1, 2013. Irvine has an estimated population of more than 231,000.

The previous leadership focused on drawing people in for temporary events at the park, not on lasting infrastructure and amenities, said Jeff Lalloway, a city councilman who also serves as the park’s chairman. “I want to actually build things at the park—amenities, so that people can come in and do stuff on a Sunday afternoon,” he said.

4th Annual Irvine Korean Festival

The Annual Irvine Korean Cultural Festival is an event designed to commemorate Korean immigration to the United States, which began in 1903. The festival also represents an opportunity to celebrate and share Korean cultural heritage and artistic traditions with the broader Irvine community and Orange County. The Festival is a culture-filled extravaganza replete with fine Korean cuisine, games, art, music, and entertainment. Stamp Out Hunger on May 11

The 21^st annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place on Saturday, May 11. The Campbell Soup Company will again join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers for this event, which is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Residents across Orange County can make a donation in just ONE easy step:

1) Place non-perishable food items next to the mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday. Then, local letter carriers will pick up the donated items and bring them to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
